Kalundborg Symbiosis

Kalundborg Symbiose is the unifying organization for seventeen public and private companies in the industry in Kalundborg. Since 1972, the collaboration has developed the world's first and leading industrial symbiosis, where member companies systematically exchange water, energy and materials. The basic idea is that surplus resources from one company can be used as input in another company's production. In this way, waste, resource consumption and CO₂ emissions are reduced, while the companies achieve financial gains. The symbiosis is today an international reference example of circular production and green industrial development. At the same time, the collaboration contributes to growth and innovation in Kalundborg. Kalundborg Symbiose also functions as a platform for learning, development and inspiration for industrial symbioses globally.
